4-8 January: Comparatives and Superlatives

Hi class,

Today we will be spending a bit of time on comparing things

For example, Lance is taller than Miss Garo, Victoria is younger than Lance, but miss Garo is older than Lance. When you do this in English we call this the 'Comparative' because you are comparing one thing to another.

We will start with the basic, just COMPARING, mostly in English we just add ‘er’ on to the word when comparing:

Tall become Taller
Old becomes Older

Lance is taller, Victoria is younger, Miss Garo is older
·

·      Light
·      Strong
·      Quick
·      Hot
·      Fat
·      Strange
·      Wide
·      Cute
·      Fine
·      Fresh
·      Loud

When words end in an 'e' we simply add 'r' as the e is already there.
also, for words such as Fat and Hot, we double the consonant as it is a 1 syllable word.

·      Happy
·      Silly
·      Lonely

Replace the 'Y' and add an ‘I’

Once you are done with the COMPARATIVE, you will move on to the SUPERLATIVE

The superlative is when it is the most:

Victoria is tall, miss Garo is taller, Lance is the tallest

Most of the time in English you add ‘est’ on to the end

But now, there are some exceptions:

Modern, Beautiful, interesting, important, intense,

More beautiful, most beautiful

And then, there are some irregulars:
Good Better
Bad Worse
Far  Farther
Many More
Little Less

Some questions: Who is a good musician? Who is the best? etc
