18-22 January: Who, What, When, Where, and Why

In English, these 5 words are the most common questions asked and if you are able to master them you will be well on your way to mastering the English Language

The Who is the subject or character—the person in the sentence or story. 
The What is composed of the details of what’s happening, which is the plot line or story. 
The When is the timeline—yesterday, today or tomorrow. 
Where is the location or setting, which is where sensory words are key to painting a picture of the setting or stage. 
And Why is the explanation of the event or plot.

We will practise a few of these together and then you will read the following newspaper articles and answer the questions for yourself.


Three big UK retailers, including Amazon, are telling customers to throw away hoverboards because of safety worries. There have been reports of them exploding. Consumers will get a refund if they take their hoverboard to a recycling centre. Hoverboards are like self-balancing, two-wheeled skateboards. They are a very popular gift this Christmas. The retailers' decision will disappoint many children.


A consumer group in the UK said half-a-million people bought a hoverboard as a Christmas gift. Another million people have it on their shopping list. Britain's largest store said: "We've suspended the sale of all hoverboards…as a precautionary measure." Amazon said: "We regret the inconvenience…but trust you will understand that your safety and satisfaction is our highest priority." Hoverboards are not allowed on public roads.
